English 11

Mrs. Carter Conklin

This year long course focuses on American Literature (fall semester) and British Literature (spring semester). American and British Literature are survey courses, meaning that students will be exposed only to small portions of the most significant literary periods in American and British literary history. Study in American Literature will include the stories from Native American culture, the settlement and independence of the United States, the expanding frontier, and the search for the American Dream.

British Literature will focus on the history of the English language and the ties that the literature of different periods has with the development of the English language throughout the centuries.

The following supplies are required for this course

* 3 ring binder (1 inch is fine) – All handouts will be three-hole punched and should be kept in your English binder
*loose leaf paper – for notes and handwritten assignments.

I DO NOT ACCEPT ASSIGNMENTS WITH NOTEBOOK FRINGE

*A one-subject spiral notebook (at least 100 pages) – This notebook will be your English journal where you will write all your journal entries. The journal will be collected periodically for grading, so it must be separate from other classes.

Successful completion of both American and British Literature is required for graduation at Bridgman High School. A 3.0 average in all English courses is required for consideration for the AP English Literature and Composition course being offered in the fall of 2009. See the link on my homepage for more information on the AP course.
