Drawing Assignment: Insects

Design an insect of your own, using many patterns and a variety of lines.

  1. Learn about insects. All insects have 6 legs and three main body-parts: a head, thorax and abdomen. Watch the DK video INSECTS, if available.
  2. Brainstorm your own, unique insect, including the criteria listed above in #1. Try out three different ideas.
  3. Practice drawing 7-8 concentric lines. Concentric lines “hug” each other; in other words, they follow each other with a slight gap  in between. See the example.
  4. Fill the gap spaces with different patterns.

  5. Draw LOTS of concentric lines and patterns on your bugs. Have someone read Eric Carle’s The Very Quiet Cricket while drawing. Outline your lines in black Sharpie marker
  6. Color in warm and cool color combinations. Warm colors are red, orange and yellow. Cool colors are blue, green and violet, because they remind us of cool things, like ice, water, or mountains.
  7. Add antennae with chenille stems.  Add wings with tracing paper cut to your desired shape.
  8. Display.
