Drawing Assignment:  Animal Spirit

Many Native American artists use nature as their theme in works.

Pick an animal to depict.

Practive drawing a stylized version.

1. On a 12x18" sheet of drawing paper, using pencil first, draw the contour or outline of your animal. Do not draw surface textures. DO include eyes, nose, ears, and other distinguishing characteristics.

2. Outline your picture in fine-tipped black marker.

3. Practice a sheet of doodles. Include several motifs, or repeated shapes. Include some concentric lines. Include several nature themes, like leaves, plant shapes, bugs, fish, birds, sunrise or stars.

4. Fill in the positive area of your contour drawing with doodles. The whole design should be subdivided into several smaller, more manageable areas of interest. Use black marker only.

5. Cut out your animal and glue to a background color.
