Organizational Ideas For Parents & Students
Organization is a learned skill. Developing a workable system requires experimenting with different organizational strategies and a long-term commitment to the process. There are basically three types of systems as shown below.
The 1.5-inch binder system is organized for individual classes. The binder, supply pack, notebook, plastic folder (for handouts and homework), calculator and even the textbook are all the same color. By color coding, it makes it easier for the student to keep all subject materials and supplies together.

The accordian file system is a good strategy for students that need to keep all of their papers, handouts and homework in one location throughout the day. Each section in the accordian file is labeled. Sections should be set up by class subject, extracurricular activities, homework, and an other section. Using this system requires additional filing at the end of each day. Students will also have to make sure they have a place to store pens, pencils, calculators and so on. See the home filing system below for end-of-the day filing.

The zipper-binder system is another basic organizational system for students. All subject materials are kept in one location as well as supplies. A section should be created for each class, extracurricular activity and homework. As with the accordian file system, the zipper-binder system will require frequent home filing in order to stay organized.

For optimal organization, students need to create a home filing system in addition to the one used at school. Papers need to be filed together by subject and in chronological order for easy access. Keeping homework, handouts and class notes together will make homework and studying much more effective and efficient. The calendar on the front of the box can be used to create self-imposed deadlines for breaking down large assignments.
