Bridgman Special Education

End of the year report
2005-2006

During the 2005-2006 school year, the 11 special education trained personnel provided support services for 183 eligible students. This number includes 38 School of Choice students of which 19 attend BES, 14 attend RMS and 5 attended BHS.

Each student had an Individual Education Plan, (IEP), on file that listed his/her specific eligibility in one of the following impairment areas:  Autistic Impaired (AI), Cognitively Impaired (CI), Early Childhood Developmentally Delayed (ECDD), Emotionally Impaired (EI), Learning Disabled (LD), Otherwise Health Impaired (OHI), which may include students with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/ Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) or other medical concerns such as diabetes or epilepsy, Physically Impaired (PI), and Speech and Language Impaired (SLI). Students that have more than one impairment, i.e.: a learning disabled student that also has a physical impairment, is only recorded with the primary impairment, per state regulations, however all support services are provided to the student.

The following is the specific breakdown of services provided per building and impairment this past school year.

BES:40 students                        28 LD     9 OHI      2 EI     1 AI

RMS:50 students                       29 LD   12 OHI      8 EI     1 PI

BHS:37 students                       21 LD   10 OHI      4 EI     1 CI     1 AI

SLI: 56 students All 56 had a speech or language delay or problem, but not necessarily as their primary impairment.

The numbers above fluctuate slightly throughout the year due to terminations, new referrals, and/or temporary placements, among other reasons, therefore this report is based on a combination of the official December and April reports submitted to the county along with the final classroom rosters.

Bridgman had 22 students placed at offsite programs for specialized instruction for their individualized needs specified by their IEP’s. The following is the listing for services provided Bridgman special educations students this past school year:

BCISD                                            1 Infant/Toddler Early On

St. Joseph (Brown Elem.)               2 ECDD (Early Childhood Developmental Delay)

St. Joseph (Upton Middle)               1 AI (Autistic Impaired)

Included in the above count is 5 infant/toddlers receiving Early On therapy either at home or at off site programs. All of these services are provided at no charge to the students or parents and are coordinated with the Berrien County Intermediate School District. (BCISD)  Consultant services were also provided to various students by the BCISD staff as needed.

According to state and federal guidelines, all special education students must have an Individual Educational Plan meeting at least annually. This accounts for over 200 meetings. Additionally, special education students, by law, must be re-evaluated at least once every 3 years. The Berrien Intermediate School District staff evaluated over 100 new or re-evaluations this year for possible impairments, many of which qualified for new or continued services.

A goal of special education is always to return the student back to the general population when appropriate. During the 2005-2006 school year, 36 students were terminated from special education from Bridgman Public Schools for the following reasons:

                         2 dropped out of school

                         1 parent refused services

2 students chose to attend a different program (SOC)

6 accomplished all of their goals/objectives & no longer qualified

                         4 graduated

7 attended specific needs programs elsewhere

                        14 moved to another district

Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Knauf
Special Education Coordinator
