Frequently Asked Questions:
Timed addition tests--I try to give a test every week. Please help your child prepare for these by practicing the 100 addition facts (1 - 10) regularly. Our goal for second graders is 80 of the 100 correct within 5 minutes.
Homework Folders--These are to be brought home and returned to school daily. Student home-reading charts are included in the folders, and students and parents are asked to document daily that 15 minutes (or more) are spent reading at home. Please help your child remember to do this very important homework! Your support with reading at home insures your child's progress and is crucial to his/her reading success! Thank you!
Birthdays: Students are encouraged to bring an easy-to-serve/easy-to-eat treat for the class. (No drinks, please.) We have 20 students. Students may also bring a treat for the office staff (but are no longer allowed to take treats to other teachers in the school since it became too disruptive to the teaching and learning process). We celebrate each birthday with warm fuzzies, a card, and a birthday song. All summer birthdays are celebrated on the last day of school.
Friday Tastes: In our classroom good behavior is rewarded with good food on Fridays! On Mondays the class decides on a type of food (in keeping with our science curriculum so far this year, we have been selecting foods made with seeds). That word is put on the board (for example, akara or seed soup). Letters are erased when the class's behavior is poor, and added when good behavior is exhibited. If on Friday all the letters are back on the board, we get our taste that afternoon. It's a fun way to introduce children to nutritious new foods and a great incentive for good behavior!
